The Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey, UK seek to appoint a Research Fellow full time for 1 year for the project ‘Social Media and Sleep: Ethical agendas in a digital age’, funded by the Wellcome Trust.  Sleep provides a particularly interesting case study of recent developments in digital and social media and especially the ethical challenges and opportunities they embody and engender.  For example, these technologies have the potential to transform how we ‘know’ good and bad sleep; may come to be embedded within new standards, responsibilities and ideals to become a better or more productive sleeper; and may give rise to a future of work where sleep data becomes wrapped up within company health and wellbeing programmes.    The current seed funding aims to:     
   -  Develop an international network of researchers
   -  Consider and debate how best to research this area in a way which is reflexive of its own role with regard to these ethical issues
   -  Carry out one-to-one interview with key stakeholders; such as legal experts, sleep experts, clinicians and designers.
   -  Develop a large-scale representative survey to scope general population attitudes and practices

 As an experienced researcher, you will:     
   -  Organise project and network meetings
   -  Organise a methodological symposium
   -  Organise, conduct and analyse qualitative interviews
   -  Draft & design an online questionnaire; and complete basic analysis of findings
   -  Producing written reports of the findings suitable for different audiences (academic, policy, practice) and contributing to the dissemination of findings through stakeholder events.
   -  Take the lead on drafting an application for funding for a larger study
   -  Contribute to the design and organisation of stakeholder and other dissemination events (potentially including a large scale event at the 2017 British Science Association Festival)
   You will hold a PhD or equivalent in any social science discipline, which should ideally include a strong research methods component. Experience of undertaking interviews and designing and conducting online surveys would also be valuable. An interest in the sociology of sleep and/or science and technology studies would also be advantageous.    The post is based in the Department of Sociology, working with the Principal Investigator, Dr Robert Meadows. The post is full time for 12 months, although other flexible arrangements (e.g. job share) can be discussed. Some weekend work is required for this post, as part of a 36 hour week. Successful candidates will be expected to start in October 2016.
