The Internet Society is organizing a special live event focused on
‘Community Networking’. These are projects that bring Internet connectivity
to communities previously isolated from the digital revolution.
Be it high into the Himalayas, deep into the country side of India or the
hills of Mexico, we will hear from people are taking the Internet to places
where a cell phone connection can help save lives, educate children or
connect loved ones.

1. *Rajnesh Singh*, ISOC Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau
Director:High-level overview of ISOC’s Wireless for Communities Project
(W4C) <http://wforc.in/> in APAC that has been running since 2010, and
the impact he is seeing through in the communities we work in with our
partners.
2. *Osama Manzar*, Director/Founder, Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF)
<http://defindia.org/>, ISOC has forged a partnership with DEF to
support their W4C efforts.Through our partnership with DEF over 13 Indian
villages in rural India have been connected, micro-enterprises have been
started, health centres and schools brought online, and the community
trained to build and roll-out community networks.
3. *Mahabir Pun*, Nepal Wireless Networking Project
<http://www.nepalwireless.net/> an ISOC Hall of Fame awardee, Mr. Pun's
work provides connectivity to villages in Nepal through community wireless
projects. He also has assisted ISOC’s APAC team by training trainers for
our W4C efforts in the region. In late 2015 his team helped expand the W4C
project to Nepal by connecting 8 villages in earthquake-affected areas.
4. *Roger Baig Vinas*, Guifi.net <https://guifi.net/> project and ISOC
Catalan Chapter member:Guifi.net is an award winning Commons-based wireless
for community project in Catalonia, Spain. Members from Guifi.net are part
of the ISOC Catalan chapter, and a key part of the technical training and
network development team.
5. *Mike Jensen*, Association for Progressive Communications (APC), is
an active supporter of community based networks and innovative radio
spectrum use. He has worked to raise awareness of the potential for TV
White Space technology in reaching the unconnected, and operates a
mesh-wifi network for his neighbours.
6. *Peter Bloom*, Rhizomatica <https://rhizomatica.org/>, Peter Bloom
founded Rhizomatica in 2009 to address a need to transfer photos and videos
between human rights defenders in Nigeria without passing through the
networks of large telecommunication companies. Now this organization has
become an umbrella that supports communities without cellular coverage to
build and manage their own mobile networks.
7. *Jane Butler/Sebastian Beuttrich* – Wireless Networking in the
Developing World <http://wndw.net/>, the team behind WNDW have been key
drivers of training programs for wireless networking community development.
