The Pew Research Center has data on general internet usage and online abuse behaviors: http://www.pewinternet.org/2017/07/11/online-harassment-2017/

Roughly four-in-ten Americans have personally experienced online harassment, and 62% consider it a major problem.

Also, a new book coming out spring called Mediating Misogyny with chapters on general population and effects on journalists.
Tracy Everbach and Jacqueline Vickery are editors.

Hi Becky,

Have you come across this recent Data & Society report? It focuses on
online abuse, but does give information on the prevalence of abuse in the
US:

Lenhart, Amanda; Ybarra, Michele; Zickhur, Kathryn; Price-Feeney, Myesha.

& Society. *URL:

Chrissy Cook, from Tilburg University, presented some on-going work on
trolling, based on interviews with trolls. I don't think it's available
online, but here is her presentation title:
Under the bridge: An in-depth exploration of trolling in online games
