Hi Colleagues,

Note the upcoming June 20 deadline for this AoIR 2017 Tartu Pre-conference on "Understanding and Distorting the Internet, Metaphors of Experience in 2017"

This AoIR Preconference (Tartu, 18 October 2017) invites participants to submit abstracts for a workshop exploring contemporary metaphorical frameworks for making sense of lived experience in/of networked publics.

Almost 20 years ago Annette Markham (1998, 2003) proposed a framework of the internet as a tool, as a place and as a way of being. Though not mutually exclusive, these three metaphors invoke and foster divergent ways of making sense of networked and technologically-mediated communication. This full day preconference workshop invites internet researchers to engage with these metaphors to discuss, extend, build on or challenge Markham’s framework

We invite colleagues to a discussion of the (changing) metaphors of everything internet. This includes, but is not limited to metaphors of internet as used by or in various networked publics, metaphors of publics and publicness as used in various discourse, and metaphorical analysis of the concept of (networked) publics itself.

Your own abstract might focus on such things as:
*study of contemporary lived experiences of the internet through the lens of metaphors – in particular, Markham’s (1998, 2003) framework;
*conceptual, historical and theoretical visions of the shifts in dominant metaphors of “the internet”;
*extensions or challenges to existing frameworks;
*theoretical implications of engaging with metaphors to conceptually describe experience and sensemaking; or
*something else relevant to the CFP

Deadline to submit a short abstract for consideration to one of the 20 reserved seats: June 20, 2017: See more at https://aoir.org/aoir2017/preconworkshop/#UDI <https://aoir.org/aoir2017/preconworkshop/#UDI>

Best Regards, and looking forward to seeing you in Tartu!

Annette Markham (along with my co-facilitators Katrin Tiidenberg, Nancy Baym, Cindy Tekobbe, and Terri Senft)
