Der all, dear Annette,

this is a great initiative, thanks!

In a very similar fashion, Stefan Larsson and I are currently editing an article series on the politics of metaphors in the digital society:

- Introductory post: Imagining the Digital Society – Metaphors from the Past and Present https://www.hiig.de/en/blog/imagining-the-digital-society-metaphors-from-the-past-and-present/
- Christian Djefall: Artificial Intelligence – A Metaphor or the seed of personality of machines in a digitised society? https://www.hiig.de/en/blog/ai-a-metaphor-or-the-seed-of-personality-of-machines-in-a-digitised-society/
- Noam Tirosh/Amit Schejter: Revolution – Who benefits from the so-called New Media Revolution? https://www.hiig.de/en/blog/wer-profitiert-von-der-sogenannten-new-media-revolution/

This is very much in the beginning. In the pipeline are pieces by Nicholas John on „Sharing“, Tarleton Gillespie on „Platforms“ and some more. But we are still looking for authors, ideally with short pieces on single (or competing) metaphors and the narratives, politics they bring about.

Any AoIR-istas like to join? Ping me.

And of course, I hope to be be able to join the workhsop in Tartu.

Looking forward,
Christian

> Note the upcoming June 20 deadline for this AoIR 2017 Tartu Pre-conference on "Understanding and Distorting the Internet, Metaphors of Experience in 2017"
>
> This AoIR Preconference (Tartu, 18 October 2017) invites participants to submit abstracts for a workshop exploring contemporary metaphorical frameworks for making sense of lived experience in/of networked publics.
>
> Almost 20 years ago Annette Markham (1998, 2003) proposed a framework of the internet as a tool, as a place and as a way of being. Though not mutually exclusive, these three metaphors invoke and foster divergent ways of making sense of networked and technologically-mediated communication. This full day preconference workshop invites internet researchers to engage with these metaphors to discuss, extend, build on or challenge Markham’s framework
>
> We invite colleagues to a discussion of the (changing) metaphors of everything internet. This includes, but is not limited to metaphors of internet as used by or in various networked publics, metaphors of publics and publicness as used in various discourse, and metaphorical analysis of the concept of (networked) publics itself.
>
> Your own abstract might focus on such things as:
> *study of contemporary lived experiences of the internet through the lens of metaphors – in particular, Markham’s (1998, 2003) framework;
> *conceptual, historical and theoretical visions of the shifts in dominant metaphors of “the internet”;
> *extensions or challenges to existing frameworks;
> *theoretical implications of engaging with metaphors to conceptually describe experience and sensemaking; or
> *something else relevant to the CFP
>
> Deadline to submit a short abstract for consideration to one of the 20 reserved seats: June 20, 2017: See more at https://aoir.org/aoir2017/preconworkshop/#UDI <https://aoir.org/aoir2017/preconworkshop/#UDI>
