If you know roughly when it started, you can do amazing work with Twitter's
Advanced Search

https://twitter.com/search-advanced?lang=en

Set the date range, enter the query, and you can poke around with
historical data samples. I got so excited about this tool when it came out,
I made a 2-minute explanatory video:
