almost completely absent.  This results in the formation of a particular
perception, interpretation, ideology, culture and language of ICTs,
reflecting an androcentric reality. Furthermore, this reality is best
described as monocultural, elitist, and characterised by strong
Euro-North American dominance.  The Tokyo Congress is an excellent
opportunity to address some of the issues related to 'absent
multivocalities' and 'all inclusive spatialities' in the mass-mediated,
globally networked world we inhabit, with special reference to the power
of religious symbols, ideas, practices and communities. 

The theme of the panel is open to interpretation and individual papers
are invited to address any subject(s)/issue(s) either from the core
theme, namely 'Religion: Conflict and Peace', or from other topics (on
the Congress web site there are a number of ideas, but please feel free
to explore other questions/concepts).  

It is important to note that 'ICTs' should be understood as an
all-inclusive term. Information and communication can be exchanged,
transmitted and disseminated through a wide variety of different media,
methods, techniques, strategies, means, approaches, processes and
courses of action. Thus apart from computers and telecommunications,
local and global networks, the Internet, the Web and Cyberspace, the
term also refers to radio, television, and any other imaginable media,
local, regional and/or global, known and unknown.   Furthermore, the
term 'discourse' may also be interpreted as 'written or spoken or
performed communication or debate.' Therefore, symbolic discourses such
as images, rituals, forms of art, etc. may also be considered. 

Some possible topics: 

Women's inclusion/exclusion from information technologies;

Women's initiatives in forming online religious groups; 

Missionaries and the spread of female theology/spirituality through
ICTs;  

Mediating women's sexual and reproductive rights;

Gender, technology and religious Identity;    

Religious Cyberfeminism; 

The Internet in the service of women's religious and spiritual
development;

Language, gender and religious expressions in multimediated
environments; 

Gender cultural and religious construction in the new media; 

Women as religious/cultural users, producers and decision makers of mass
media; 

How far women have succeeded in building women's networks for sharing,
exchanging and transmitting religious/spiritual views, beliefs,
practices and experiences? 

Gender based digital divide: myths, realities and actualities;

Women's ideologies of the self in the culture of cyberspace; 

Women communicating indigenous cultural/religious/spiritual values,
beliefs and/or practices

Given that that IAHR World Congress is the premier location for
cross-cultural, multidisciplinary, and international scholarship on
religion, my goal is to encourage participation from scholars around the
