*RHUL Call for Applications: PhD programme*



The Department of Media Arts, Royal Holloway University of London, invites
PhD applications for a range of funding opportunities, including AHRC
funded scholarships, starting in academic year 2018-2019. The department’s
research focuses on the analysis and practice of film, television, digital
media and contemporary art, with a specific focus on digital media theory
and aesthetics, Hollywood, Asian and European cinemas, screen narrative,
television history and technology, the representation of class, ethnicity
and gender, cultures of celebrity, digital image, visualisation, data-based
cultures and modernist art practices, as well as the production of dramas,
documentaries, web-based projects and installations.



Students are welcome to apply with any topic. The department has numerous
experienced supervisors with a range of expertise.  This year, we are
particularly interested in applications that address the following topics:



-       *Subjectivity and technology*, including the changing notions of
personhood with the rise of social media, data extractionism, datafied
self, profiling, and machine learning; data and selfhood in
ethico-aesthetic dimensions of computation as well as socio-political

-       *Television history,* the exploration of lost, forgotten and
critically neglected works of television drama and documentary; the history
of canon formation in television studies and the relationship between
television history, research and the archive (and related archival issues
such as digital availability and access).Please contact Professor John Hill

-       *World cinema and exoticism.* Encounters with cultural difference
in transnational and World Cinema, in particular, contemporary discourses
on the exotic and exoticism, as well as the representation of migration and
