The Department of Communication Studies has 27 full-time faculty with areas
of emphasis in Health Communication, Media Studies, Organizational
Communication, Public Relations, and Rhetoric. The department serves
approximately 1,300 majors and 25 M.A. students. The department’s primary
mission is to provide high quality instruction to its undergraduate and
graduate students, and to contribute significantly to the understanding of
communication issues as they affect people’s lives, especially in the
Charlotte metropolitan region. Through its teaching, scholarship and
service the department is committed to serving diverse populations.

*Description of Work*

course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research,
curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All
tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding
the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or
engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty
member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with
respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative
activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates
existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research,
scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural
support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and
tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service
appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential
functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to:
service to the administration and governance of the University, public

*Essential Duties and Responsibilities*

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a
related area, along with the demonstration of:

• An active research agenda that can lead to significant publications and
external grants
• An ability to teach courses in the theory, research, and practice of
digital media and technologies
• A commitment and ability to work with a diverse student population of
undergraduate and graduate students

Successful candidates will conduct research, teach B.A. and M.A. students
in the Department of Communication Studies, and perform service. The
standard teaching load is two classes each semester during the probationary
period. Depending upon scholarly interest, candidates may affiliate with
doctoral programs in Organizational Science and Health Psychology. The
successful candidate may also have the opportunity to participate in an
interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Digital Cultures and Communication, a
collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the
College of Computing & Informatics, currently in the planning stages. The
successful candidate must showcase evidence of a commitment to promote
diversity as a value in the department, college and university. Finalists
will be asked during their screening interview to discuss how the topics of
diversity and inclusion are incorporated into their teaching and research.

*Minimum Experience/Education*

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or
terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

*Preferred Education, Skills and Experience*

Ideally, the successful candidate would have familiarity with quantitative,
mixed or emerging methodologies; advance a critical understanding of
digital media and technologies;and utilize the big data resources available
through UNC Charlotte’s Data Science Initiative, a program dedicated to
bringing together scholars interested in analytics and quantitative studies
in a plurality of contexts. The department seeks a versatile scholar who
excels in an interdisciplinary environment. He/she/they will thrive when
interacting with colleagues who employ varied theoretical, methodological,
and topical approaches.
