Come work at RPI!  Two open Lecturer positions, listed below, one in "Information Technology, Design, and Society," and one in "Game Design and Development.”

Review of applications for both positions begins immediately, but for those of us who like deadlines, I can (unofficially) suggest that a good application deadline for the “IT, Design, and Society” position is October 20th, 2017.

The Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a Faculty Fellow or Lecturer focused on Information Technology, Design, and Society. Rensselaer’s STS Department offers a Ph.D. and three undergraduate B.S. degrees: Science, Technology, and Society; Design, Innovation, and Society; and Sustainability Studies. The candidate must be prepared to teach large introductory lecture courses focused on the social impacts of information technology, as well as advanced seminar courses on the critical analysis and design of digital systems. Courses to be taught include IT and Society, Digital Design in History, and Open Source Art, Music, and Culture.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent in anthropology, sociology, history, science and technology studies, new media studies, or a related field. Evidence of effective teaching is required. Ability to interact effectively with faculty in a broadly inclusive department is important, as is ability to effectively engage students and faculty from other disciplines, particularly in computer science and information technology.

The Program in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY invites applications for a faculty position in Game Design and Development. Appointment will be a non-tenured position on a three year, renewable contract, at the rank of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Professor of Practice. We seek outstanding applicants with industry experience or creative practice, and who can demonstrate a record of successful collegiate teaching. The selected candidate will join a diverse, interdepartmental faculty whose research spans game technology, platform studies, game studies, game design, interactive narrative, educational games, serious games, psychological and cognitive dimensions of games, indie game production, and games as an art form.

The GSAS Program is consistently ranked as one of the top games programs in North America, with an interdisciplinary curriculum combining practical and theoretical approaches to game development. The successful candidate must have experience in creating games and a working knowledge of current game engines and development environments such as Unity3D or Unreal Engine 4. Responsibilities will include teaching a variety of courses based on specialization; examples may include Introduction to Game Design/Development, UI/UX Design for Games, 3D Modeling and Texturing, and/or higher-level technical and special topics courses in the area of the candidate’s specialty. In addition, the faculty member will also advise undergraduate students, perform university and professional service, and will contribute to the development of a new graduate program in GSAS. The ability to forge corporate and foundation partnerships is highly desired.

To be considered at any level, candidates must hold a terminal degree, or foreign degree equivalent, in one, or a combination of the following: Game Design, Game Studies, Digital/Interactive Media, Computer Science, Art and Technology, or a related discipline, and be able to exhibit, through their accomplishments, promise of future distinction in relevant scholarly or artistic practice. To be appointed as a Professor of Practice, candidates must have substantial professional experience of at least 10-15 years, along with a national or international reputation for excellence in their field of expertise.
