Digital Literacies, Languages and Cultures

The Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED), located in the Faculty of Education at the
University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Point Grey), invites applications for an Associate Professor
or Professor with tenure in Digital Literacies, Languages and Cultures. This position will build on the
Faculty of Education and UBC’s leadership in fields such as data visualization, network literacies,
knowledge literacies, language technologies, learning analytics, and online education. The position is
expected to commence July 1, 2018.

The Department is seeking a scholar with a proven track record of excellence in Digital Literacies,
Languages and Cultures, and a successful history of generating peer-reviewed funding and leading
interdisciplinary groups. Applicants for this position should hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field.
Leadership capabilities for directing a research cluster and for potential leadership of the Digital Literacy
Centre would be of value. The successful applicant’s research and teaching interests and expertise may
include but are not limited to: the application, development, and critical analysis of digital technologies
and media in education; the impact of digitalization on literacies, language use and acquisition in learning
processes; digital game studies, play, and creativity; game-based learning; immersive virtual
environments; internet cultures; digital narratology and rhetoric; data visualization, mining, and big data;
surveillance, copyright and IP; and Open Access / Source, digital publishing, and search engines.

We anticipate that the successful candidate will collaborate on funded research, publication, and teaching
in the broad and interdisciplinary area of Digital Literacies, Languages and Cultures, as well as add research
expertise to LLED and the Bachelor of Education and Master of Educational Technology (MET) programs.
The successful candidate will help recruit high-caliber graduate students who are seeking expertise
regarding the interdisciplinary focus on digital literacies, languages, cultures, and learning in education.

Beyond the Department, there are collaborative possibilities, including with the Media and Graphics
Interdisciplinary Centre (MAGIC) and the Virtual and Augmented Reality Working Group. This position is
open to an outstanding researcher who provides international leadership in their field of study through
proven teaching expertise and a research program within a digital cultures research community. The
successful candidate will bring a fresh dimension to the study of digital languages, literacies, and cultures.

The successful candidate is expected to (a) teach both advanced and introductory classes in
undergraduate and graduate programs coordinated by the Department, including courses in the teacher
education program; (b) supervise graduate students enrolled in the Department's programs, and
contribute grant support to doctoral student trainees; (c) be engaged in sustained and productive
scholarly activity, (d) contribute to the scholarly community and service work of the Department, the
Faculty of Education, and the University community; and (e) participate in outreach within the broader
educational community. The annual workload for this position is 4 courses (12 credits) or equivalent.

The Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED, www.lled.educ.ubc.ca) is a vibrant,
multidisciplinary group of outstanding researchers committed to excellence in scholarship, teaching,
community engagement, and professional leadership. Our research and teaching are responsive to
Canada's multicultural, multilingual contexts and the changing global and transnational influences
on languages, literacies and cultures. Department members engage in research collaborations with

understandings, practical knowledge, and the study of the teaching and learning of language,
literacy, literature and culture in their broadest sense. A major emphasis of the Department is on
issues of equity and justice in a range of educational contexts and across a range of cultures. The
department contributes to the Faculty's Teacher Education Program and Master of Educational
Technology and offers Master's and Ph.D. programs in Literacy Education, Teaching English as a
Second Language, and Modern Language Education.
