*PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:*

Design Cultures & Creativity (DCC) is a living-learning program in the
Honors College at the University of Maryland, College Park. DCC fosters an
open, collaborative, and social environment that encourages students to
explore the relationship between emerging media, society, and creative
practices. We are passionate about emerging technologies and their impact
on the world; but even more importantly, how our contributions to emerging
technologies can change the world. DCC students are innovative thinkers and
makers who engage in research and collaborative projects on topics as
varied as identity, connectivity, social justice, art, design, and all
things creative in an era when digital media links us on a scale
unprecedented in human history.

*POSITION DESCRIPTION: *
The Associate Director is a full-time, 12-month position that provides
academic, instructional, and administrative support to the Design Cultures
& Creativity (DCC) Program in the Honors College at the University of
Maryland. We are seeking a passionate, creatively-minded, well organized
academic professional, a person with vision and skill as an administrator,
a gifted teacher with a passion for undergraduate education, and an
interdisciplinary scholar that can bridge creative practice with research.
The successful candidate must be self-motivated, driven, and an
interdisciplinary thinker/maker able to wear many hats. Core components of
the position include development of innovative curriculum and experiential
programming, strategic planning, classroom instruction, and advising of
first- and second-year students in an active living and learning academic
environment. Administrative, advising, and program management duties are
also an important component of this position. In addition, candidates
should be extremely comfortable with a range of new technologies and
approaches to project development. Candidates should be able link emerging
technologies with social implications relating to identity such as gender,
race, class, and sexual orientation. Candidates should show a strong
commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population;
candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of faculty,
staff, and students and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity
are encouraged to identify their experiences in these areas.

*RESPONSIBILITIES:*
The AD will teach a 1-2/semester course load as well as direct related
co-curricular programming. Some of the topics of these courses can be
tailored to fit the Associate Director’s areas of interest and expertise.
Previous courses have included: Mobile Media Design and Culture; Time-Based
Media; Art and Environmental Practices; Digital Storytelling; Expanded
Cinema; Gender, Race and Labor in the Digital World; Human-Centered Design;
and Digital Media and Political Activism.

Additional responsibilities include logistical and organizational support
for program events and activities; coordination and implementation of
annual student recruitment; planning and coordination of the DCC annual
Capstone Fair and Exhibition; coordination of guest artist and guest
faculty engagements; administration of office tasks; scheduling and
implementation of periodic advising sessions with program students; work
with scheduling officers in the College of Arts and Humanities as well as
the Honors College to develop course offerings. Since this position
involves a large amount of student contact, candidates must feel
comfortable and enjoy working with university applicants, admitted
undergraduates, and their families.

*Minimum Qualifications:*

   - Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in relevant field
   - Degree conferral date no later than November 1, 2018
   - At least 1 year teaching experience at college/university level
   - Administrative skills appropriate for daily program operations such
   as: event planning, budget and finance management, scheduling, recruitment,
   and student advising.
   - Hands-on skills in digital media. Areas of particular interest
   include: 3D printing or other forms of digital fabrication, digital design
   and architecture, video/film, human-computer interaction, gaming, virtual
   reality, and mobile development/app design.
   - Excellent written, oral, computing and presentation skills, as well as
   enthusiasm, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in
   person and via email with all levels of program constituents which include
   students, graduate students, campus faculty and staff, administrators,
   alumni and off campus community partners.
