PhD Scholarship in memorial technologies, design, and their social implications, at the University of Melbourne.
We are seeking a PhD student to join our interdisciplinary team of researchers, working on a project investigating The Future Cemetery.
Project
The successful applicant/candidate will join the DeathTech Research team<https://deathtech.org/>, an established interdisciplinary team of anthropologists, social scientists, and human-computer interaction specialists based at the University of Melbourne.  The Future Cemetery project, in which the PhD student will be located, is a three-year Linkage project funded by the Australian Research Council (Grant no: LP180100757<https://rms.arc.gov.au/RMS/Report/Download/Report/a3f6be6e-33f7-4fb5-98a6-7526aaa184cf/199>) with the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust as our research partner.
Applicant
The successful applicant will commence in January 2020, and work closely with the research team and industry partner on research focusing on the potential of new technologies, designs, services and applications to enhance future cemetery spaces in terms of public experience, service offerings, and community connections. The project will offer the student the opportunity to develop their own individual research questions and threads, whilst also working as an integral part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary team. The student will receive a full-time scholarship of $30,600 AUD per annum for 3 years, as well as the opportunity for travel for research fieldwork and presentations, and research training in producing a range of research publications and outcomes.
Eligibility
The applicant must have completed an undergraduate degree (and honours or masters equivalent with minor thesis component) in a relevant area from across the social sciences, including both applied and theoretical domains of technology or design. This may include but is not limited to: urban planning and design, human-computer interaction and user-experience design, media and communication studies, design anthropology and digital ethnography, science and technology studies. A strong interest in design methods and methodologies, in particular participatory design and user-centred design methods, is desired.
