#1 Defining and Measuring Disinformation

DATALAB hosts a conference to kick off the establishment of an interdisciplinary Nordic network of researchers studying online disinformation (NORDIS). The conference focuses on the fundamental problem of observing and measuring disinformation: How can we define and measure online disinformation in a holistic way – without being limited by discipline-specific views?


Online disinformation has emerged as one of the most urgent political and democratic issues of recent times. Despite a general understanding of the underlying dynamics behind online disinformation and the availability of generally accepted taxonomies of disinformation, an effective solution is still not available and important aspects are still largely under-researched.

Research on disinformation has already made numerous efforts to understand the cultural and the psychological aspects of the phenomenon, but disciplinary specialization has led scholars to focus mainly either on one or the other aspect – resulting in a general lack of conceptual coherence.

It is thus becoming more and more evident that a solution to the problem cannot be reached without breaking the boundaries between disciplines. This process will have to involve several fields of research and should not be limited to the academic world, and therefore a proper interdisciplinary approach must be adopted.

Organization

This is the first of a series of three workshops to be held as part of the initiative “Online disinformation: an integrated view” supported by The Joint Committee for Nordic research councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS) in an effort to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of online disinformation. The other two workshops will be held in Oslo (Norway) and Uppsala (Sweden). All workshops aim to gather researchers from media studies, political communication, computer sciences and philosophy as well as actors from outside academia such as journalists and policy makers. The conference will be the first event in NORDIS, the "Nordic network on the study of online disinformation and its effects on civil and democratic processes” and an excellent opportunity to join the network from the beginning.

Joan Donovan – Director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at Harvard Kennedy’s Shorenstein Center – will be a keynote speaker at the conference. Among other things, she leads Data & Society’s Media Manipulation Initiative.

Submission of papers
Within the context of Defining and Measuring Disinformation, we encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims:

  *   Operational definition of disinformation
  *   Tracking disinformation propagation
  *   Mapping and quantifying disinformation
  *   Data access and format for measuring disinformation propagation
  *   Methods for analysing disinformation at scale

We invite 800-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-oriented papers that address these or associated topics. Abstracts should be accompanied by a 100-word biography of the presenter(s) together with contact details.


Nordic Network on Disinformation (NORDIS)
The project is a collaboration between four Nordic Universities and organized by the following program committee:

Presenters can apply for a travel grants, but it is not guaranteed. For the travel grants, young Nordic researchers will be prioritised.
