Non-Tenure-Track Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Professor of Practice in Game Cultures and Design

The Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences Program (GSAS) in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a full-time open-rank non-tenure track faculty position in Game Cultures and Design beginning Fall 2019.

We seek applicants with a passion for making games, a strong record of professional accomplishment or individual creative practice and demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the college level. The ideal candidate will have expertise in studying digital games as cultural objects, and in applying those lessons to the design of new kinds of game experiences, or for the design of games for multiple audiences.

Teaching responsibilities will include core topics in game studies and game design, including historical/cultural approaches to games, issues of gender/race/society and games, paper prototyping and playtesting, narrative design, and/or an early-stage game concept development, and may also include topics in the candidate’s area of specialty.

Potential candidates must possess a terminal degree (Ph.D., M.F.A. or foreign degree equivalent) at the time of appointment in Game Studies, Game Design or a related field, including Communication, Media Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Design Studies, Product Design, Human-Centered Design, or User-Experience Design; or a comparable combination of educational preparation and professional experience.

Prior teaching experience at the university level is preferred, and evidence of effective teaching is required. The ideal candidate will have a broad vision of game design, games as cultural objects, the integration of disciplines in games, and the role of games in society. The ability to teach students from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, and to advance diversity and inclusivity in games education and the games industry is highly desired.
