[Air-L] Job vacancy: All-round system administrator and developer for web research at the University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam is looking for an all-round system
administrator and tool developer in the area of digital methods research at
the New Media and Digital Culture program.

The position is for 30.4 hours per week (0.8 FTE) for the duration of one
year. After positive assessment, the appointment will be converted into a
permanent contract.

Your tasks:
Development and maintenance of tools for courses in the New Media program.

For the MA and BA digital research methods courses, these tools include the
Internet Censorship Explorer, Google Scrapers (Web, news, blogs), the
Wayback Machine scraper, as well as programs that help map hyperlink
networks within Wikipedia and parsing and analyzing Wikipedia edit
histories. For an overview of tools see tools.digitalmethods.net. The
developer is also expected to write manuals for the use of tools, for
example for collecting and analyzing archived pages of a website. The
instruments, methods and techniques are developed in close collaboration
with Prof. Dr. Richard Rogers and the researchers of the Digital Methods
Initiative. With these instruments, methods and techniques, the Digital
Methods Initiative is globally leading and innovative in its education and
research methods.

Maintaining and developing the Masters of Media blog. This work also
includes supervising students with the technical aspects of blogging:
designing a site, adjusting plug-ins, determining important
functionalities, et cetera. Mastersofmedia.hum.uva.nl has a good ten
thousand unique visitors per month.

Your profile:
As a suitable candidate you have:


   - at least a BA education;
   - knowledge of and experience with the system management of web servers
   (physical and VPS);
   - good knowledge of Linux. Experience with OSX and Windows;
   - experience with interfacing with web APIs;
   - knowledge of and experience with HPC and distributed storage;
   - experience with databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL but also NoSQL;
   - knowledge of and experience with the management and adaptation of
   blogs (Wordpress) and wikis;
   - experience in multiple web technologies such as PHP and Python, DHTML,
   AJAX, CSS, SVG, JSON, XML, XQuery, XSLT;
   - affinity with open standards.
