I would suggest recent work on Facebook,
which clearly and dramatically shows what not to do to generate collective intelligence.
The generation of collective stupidity seems to offer much more robust results.

Once specific study showed that attacks on minorities in German towns was directly correlated with Facebook utilization. This should provide plenty of insider insights:
