Faculty at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) in the
Social Media Research Lab (SMRL) are recruiting students for fully funded
PhDs in Social Media, Online Communities, and Social Computing. Our
students work with an interdisciplinary faculty to do world-class research
on topics such as:

social media use and online communities in daily, home, school, and work
   settings
   -

how social media use impacts everyday life
   -

how social media and online communities can be leveraged to positively
impact wellbeing, social relationships, inclusion of marginalized
communities, educational outcomes, and civic engagement
   -

applying theories from computer-mediated communication, media studies,
social psychology, science and technology studies, social computing,
human-centered computing, justice, health, and accessibility to social
   media and online communities research

Students in UMSI’s doctoral program receive full funding for the duration
of their studies and are treated as colleagues. You will have many
opportunities to work with our world-renowned faculty on research projects;
collaborate with your peers; gain teaching experience; and gain breadth and
depth from exposure to diverse subfields of computing, the social sciences
and the humanities. Our doctoral students are exceptionally successful in
gaining employment in both academia and industry post-graduation; for
