Program Description:
The Critical Game Design programs are designed to graduate innovative, critical theory savvy game scholars and developers who work to change the face of games research, the academy, and the games industry. Our programs offer a games-as-research oriented education that synthesizes games studies research, critical theory, and other scholarly bodies of literature with production-focused skills training.

M.S. students in the program will learn how to apply insights from critical work directly to the production of new types of game designs, and will be well-positioned to enter the games industry, independent game development spaces, or to continue their education at the doctoral level.

Ph.D. students in the program learn and apply game studies, user-centered design theory, critical design, the digital humanities, and qualitative research methodology to game production in order to contribute to scholarly bodies of research in the humanities, social sciences, and interactive design fields. Graduates of the Ph.D. program will be prepared to enter academic positions as researchers and teachers, as well as to contribute to the games industry as entrepreneurs, practitioners, and consultants.

The Critical Game Design program was founded in Fall 2020 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Faculty in the program have their disciplinary homes in Arts, Cognitive Science, Communication & Media Studies, and Science & Technology Studies.
