Loyola University Chicago - Three Tenure Track Faculty Positions in School of Communication

Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication invites applications for the positions of three tenure-track assistant professors (including one option for a non-tenure-track instructor). Commitment to the social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion mission of the University is expected for all positions. Interest in contributing to the School’s growing international presence and community engagement is desired.

Position 1
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Computational Advertising and Strategic Communication

Candidates should have strong training and experience in computational advertising and strategic communication that includes one or more of these areas: programmatic advertising and behavioral targeting; artificial intelligence, machine-learning, big data and advertising; computational research approach to data analysis; human-computer interaction research on artificial intelligence advertising; or mobile consumer research, user experience, augmented reality and virtual reality. The ideal candidate would also be familiar with using computational advertising and strategic communication for social change and environmental justice.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in a related field by August 12, 2021, the start date at Loyola University Chicago; significant academic or professional experience in computational advertising, strategic communication, digital media and data; and the potential to be an outstanding teacher and productive scholar.

This new faculty member will teach courses in the latest technological advances in advertising and strategic communication, such as Digital Foundations in Ad/PR, Programmatic Media, AI Advertising, Social Media Advertising, Mobile Advertising, Advertising/PR Research and Analytics, and Big Data Research and Application for Advertising.

Position 2
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Environmental Advocacy and Social Change

Applicants should have significant training and demonstrated expertise in one or more of these areas: environmental communication, science communication, environmental philosophy, environmental racism, science and technology studies; and/or cultural studies and rhetorical studies situated within a world in which care and concern for the environment is an imperative.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Communication or a related field by August 12, 2021, the start day at Loyola University Chicago. The ideal candidate should have a track record in one or more of these areas: Community organizing for social change with an emphasis on environmental justice; bioethics or biopolitics; policy and industry narratives regarding science and environmental issues; and an international/global research program sensitive to the intersectionality of race, class, sex, gender and other forms of social privilege and marginalization; a demonstrable praxis-oriented research program relevant to these areas, which shows ability to apply complex critical and theoretical principles to concrete problems and challenges; and a research agenda that shows past success and/or serious potential in securing funding to future research and publications.

This new faculty member will teach existing courses in the Advocacy and Social Change track, as well as fundamental courses in Communication Studies and the newly formed Environmental Communication minor. Specifically, these courses include rhetorical criticism and theory; innovative research methods that fall within the critical and interpretive paradigms; communication/media activism; rhetoric and public culture; and the rhetoric of policy, technology and science; the philosophy of technology and science; media and science fiction; and the relationship between policy and the environment.

Position 3
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor or Non-Tenure-Track Instructor of Multimedia Journalism

Candidates should have strong training and experience in telling non-fiction stories on multiple platforms — from print to tablets to TVs to laptops to smartphones. In particular, candidates should have expertise in one or more of these areas: Data investigation, analysis and visualization; long-form journalism; shooting and editing non-fiction videos; and environmental and/or social justice reporting.

This new faculty member will teach courses related to her/his areas of expertise, as well as appropriate courses within the School of Communication.

For an assistant professor (tenure-track) appointment in journalism, the successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in a related field, by August 12, 2021, the start day at Loyola University Chicago; significant professional experience in journalism; and the potential to be an outstanding teacher and productive scholar.

For a non-tenure-track instructor in journalism, the appointment is a renewable multi-year contract. The successful candidate should have an earned master’s degree in a related field, significant professional experience in journalism, and the potential to be an outstanding teacher and a leader in service to the profession.
