Media Architecture: what is it, and why does it matter?
Media architecture is a newly emerging discipline, integrating digital and physical elements in the design of our cities. As a part of The Media Architecture Biennale 20, this program will explore how the design and deployment of new media technologies like urban screens, interactive art installations, and digital sensor networks can shape urban life beyond the mere spectacular, by envisioning and fuelling public debates about possible futures of the media city. Join us in this conversation and, together, let's explore how can Media Architecture help us to critically reflect on and envision the future of our cities?

Edited by Caroline Nevejan and Huda Abi Fares, and featuring a long list of authors, this publication brings together a wide diversity of voices on a number of urgent social, urban, and ecological issues.

“Cahier 1: Values for Survival” explores themes such as: Polyphonic Cities, Multispecies Urbanism, The Multiplicity of Other, Sharing Research and Circular City, and provides reflections on a number of futures to imply into media architecture, including more than human perspectives. This closely relates to our MAB20’s theme #FuturesImplied, which questions what future scenarios are implied in today’s urban context? And how can we shape our urban technologies to respond to their surroundings, contributing to cities that are both socially and ecologically sustainable?

CONFERENCE PRESENTATION | Kavita Gonsalves lead Marcus Foth, and MAB chairs Glenda Caldwell and Waldemar Jenek, in the development of a video presentation for the AMPS conference - Connections: Exploring Heritage, Architecture, Cities, Art, Media.

The presentation is titled: “Radical Placemaking: Immersive, Experiential and Activist Approaches for Marginalised Communities” and it proposes the concept of Radical Placemaking as a placemaking tactic of the marginalized where the term ‘Radical’ comes from Paulo Freire’s seminal work ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’. The elements of ‘Radical Placemaking’ are categorized into ‘who’, ‘how’ and ‘what’. This forms a significant part of Kavita Gonsalves’ PhD work at Urban Informatics, QUTDesign Lab (https://facebook.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=98b784859935f80b0b03b5324&id=90026e8b16&e=e0fc435bb0) .
