Hi, Shannon --

I'd like to point out that the world of alternative social media is not
entirely comprised of trolls, conspiracy theorists, misogynists and
bullshitters. I've written extensively on projects that are dedicated
to ameliorating the problems of corporate social media, including both
surveillance of users and monetization as well as hate speech and
harassment.

May I suggest:

* https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2056305115604338
* https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1461444820912533
*
https://twentysix.fibreculturejournal.org/fcj-190-building-a-better-twitter-a-study-of-the-twitter-alternatives-gnu-social-quitter-rstat-us-and-twister/

I've also done participant observation work on dark web social
networking sites that were, surprisingly enough, civil and moderated:

* https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1461444814554900

I would suggest a definition of alternative that includes moderation,
privacy, and anti-harassment, rather than a definition that highlights
trolling and harassment.

Regards,

Rob
