At the Computational Communication Science Lab (CCL) in the Department of
Communication, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the
University of Vienna, the following position is vacant:

*PhD position (prae-doc)*



in the research project *“Emotional Misinformation - The Interplay of
Emotion and Misinformation Spreading on Social Media” (EMOMIS)*, funded by
the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF). The project will run for
three years and starts in November 2021.



The research project aims at understanding how emotions influence the
tendency to believe and share inaccurate content, and will test the
potential of online emotion regulation interventions to reduce
misinformation spreading. It will involve analysis of social media data,
design and analysis of online interventions and surveys, as well as
agent-based modelling.

Your activities will include conducting research projects/scientific
studies in Computational Social Science, writing scientific publications,
presentations at conferences, contribution to the supervision of Master
students and research assistants and administrative tasks such as the
organization of meetings.



You will work under supervision of Prof. Annie Waldherr and closely
collaborate with Dr. Hannah Metzler, Prof. David Garcia and team at the
Complexity Science Hub Vienna. You will also be part of a vibrant research
community in the Computational Communication Science Lab (CCL) as well as
the Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences (ViDSS).



*We search for*

·       a highly motivated PhD candidate with

·       a completed postgraduate degree (MA, MSc) in Communication Science
or a related social science with a strong data analysis background – or in
Computer/Data Science with a proven interest to study human behavior

·       solid knowledge of empirical social research methods, especially
quantitative methods

·       proven interest to learn methods of Computational Social Science,
e.g., agent-based modelling and simulation, network analysis, automated
text analysis

·       coding experience in languages for data science and statistics
(e.g., R or Python)

·       strong communication abilities to communicate scientific concepts
both orally and in writing

·       excellent command of written and spoken English

·       ability to work in interdisciplinary and international research
teams

·       reliability
