SPEAKERS

Yu Xiang is an assistant professor of journalism and communication at Shanghai University in Shanghai, China. She obtained her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Westminster in London, UK. Her research interests lie in the areas of international communication, audience research and digital journalism. Her publications include but are not limited to CCTV in Africa: Constructive Approach to Manufacturing Consent (co-written with Xiaoxing Zhang), Does China’s Outward Focused Journalism Engage A Constructive Approach? A Qualitative Content Analysis of Xinhua News Agency’s English News (Co-written with Xin Zhao), and User-Generated News: Netizen Journalism in China in the Age of Short Video.

 

Dr Yan Wu is an Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies, Director of Centre on Digital Arts and Humanities at Swansea University. Dr Wu’s research interests centre on two areas. The first area covers the social impacts of digital media and communication in China with a focus on user generated content. Her other research area concentrates on the use of digital media by sensory impaired people in Wales. Her publications appear in journals such as New Media and Society; Global Media and China; International Journal of Digital Television, Modern Communication and as book chapters in Media and Public Sphere (Palgrave Macmillan 2007), Climate Change and Mass Media (Peter Lang 2008), Migration and the Media (Peter Lang 2012), and Public Diplomacy and the Politics of Uncertainty (Palgrave Macmillan 2021).

 

Dr. Jing Zeng is a senior research and teaching associate at the Department of Communication and Media Research, University of Zurich, Switzerland. Jing’s research interests include misinformation, platform study and online activism.

 

Yumeng Luo’s research interests include the uses of social media and new technologies in digitalizing the government, citizen journalism, human-centered interaction. She received her master’s degree of political communication from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Communication, University at Albany, The State University of New York in the United States and a User Experience Researcher for Code for America.

 

Dr. Florin C. Serban is a Lecturer in the Department of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received his PhD in Communication from Hong Kong Baptist University with a dissertation on the professional boundaries of legacy and digital-only journalists who work in Hong Kong. His main areas of research are media sociology, artificial intelligence and its impact on professional identities, and public participation. Before joining Hong Kong Baptist University, he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses on media and globalization, technology and society, and critical perspectives on international news at The University of Hong Kong and at City University of Hong Kong. Florin has received his MPhil in media and performance studies from Utrecht University.
