Many Australians are disengaged from the democratic process and untrusting of those who are supposed to represent them. In response to this disenchantment, a range of deliberative processes have developed that allow citizens from diverse backgrounds to discuss issues in depth. Such processes mirror the shift of information and communications models in other domains from “broadcast” to “conversation” and offer practitioners both opportunities to learn and to deploy their skills in new ways.

This session explores:
- What deliberative democracy means in its different forms?
- How it can work with existing institutions?
- What might grassroots initiatives look like?
