Hi, all,

I direct a non-profit think tank, operating within the Open Markets Institute, called the Center for Journalism & Liberty; we’re part of the Knight Research Network<https://knightfoundation.org/democracy-in-the-digital-age/>. We research issues of competition policy at the intersection of four areas: platforms, privacy, journalism business models, and content integrity/quality.

Last summer we commissioned scholarly work into news deserts in Iowa<https://www.journalismliberty.org/publications/what-makes-iowa-newspapers-resilient> and Appalachia<https://www.journalismliberty.org/publications/local-news-and-community-resiliency-in-appalachia>, and into Facebook and Google’s dominance<https://www.journalismliberty.org/publications/beggars-and-choosers-facebook-google>. Additionally a policy specialist proposed strategies<https://www.journalismliberty.org/publications/replanting-strategy-saving-local-newspapers-squeezed-by-hedge-fund> to ensure media independence, and Ethan Zuckerman, now of Mass-Amherst, provided a piece on digital public infrastructure<https://www.journalismliberty.org/publications/what-is-digital-public-infrastructure>.

Take a look at this link,<https://www.journalismliberty.org/fellowships-freelance-reporters> detailing our continual need for relevant research, pitch an idea or two, and maybe spend your summer working on a significant paper that can help legitimate online news thrive. Last summer we paid between $500 and $2,000 for accepted articles (higher rates, plus support for resources are possible).

Illinois professor Nikki Usher is a CJL fellow<https://www.journalismliberty.org/our-people/nikki-usher>, and she recommended I post this to this group, as we’re eager to explore cross-disciplinary solutions to the survival of the Fourth Estate online.

This group may also be interested in an April 20 event taking shape called Beyond Facebook & Google: The Future of Journalism & Democracy<https://www.openmarketsinstitute.org/publications/conference-after-google-and-facebook-the-future-of-journalism-and-democracy>. Watch for a link to attend, or send me an email and I’ll do so, once the day’s agenda is completed.

Hope to hear from you.

Jody
