book: *Atlas of AI*:* Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of
Artificial Intelligence *(Yale University Press, 2021). This book maps out
the planetary networks of AI systems and how they are reshaping the world
toward undemocratic governance and increased inequality.

*Book author & main speaker: *Professor Kate Crawford is renowned for her
world-leading scholarship on AI (artificial intelligence) from social,
political, and cultural perspectives. Formerly founding director of the AI Now
Institute at NYU, Crawford is currently a Research Professor of
Communication and STS at the Annenberg School of University of Southern
California, a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, and the
inaugural Visiting Chair for AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure
in Paris. Her academic research has been published in journals such as
*Nature*, *Science*, and *Information, Communication & Society*. Beyond
academic journals, she has also written for *The New York Times, The
Atlantic, Harpers’ Magazine*, among others. Her work also includes
collaborative art projects and critical visual design. Her project* Anatomy
of an AI System *with Vladan Joler — which maps the full lifecycle of the
Amazon Echo — won the Beazley Design of the Year Award in 2019, and is in
the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the
V&A Museum in London.
