Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, Data and Society

DESCRIPTION

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of
Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University is seeking
a full-time, benefits-eligible Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor of
Data and Society. This new faculty member will contribute primarily to our
online and campus-based programs.

We are seeking a scholar who has experience working and teaching students
across disciplines. An ideal candidate understands the relationship between
social institutions and networked digital systems, and has experience using
and teaching social science-based approaches to data science. The applicant
would be expected to teach required courses in the master’s programs,
including those in digital methods, data wrangling, communicating data
science, theories of data and society, and other courses. The current

load is four courses each semester.

We draw students from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines and
prefer applicants who can demonstrate teaching approaches that effectively
engage emerging scholars from a diversity of backgrounds and disciplinary
training. Our hope is to find a dedicated teacher-scholar who is passionate
about building a new cadre of researchers and professionals in our existing
graduate programs and contributing to future curricular initiatives.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is presently in a period of
expansion and innovation around new initiatives and programs, including
those in Social Data Science and Cognitive Data Science. It participates in
a college-wide collaboration around Biological, Behavioral, Computational,
and Critical (B2C2) Data Initiative.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

* Teach four courses each semester, online and on campus.
* Mentor graduate students.
* Update courses to ensure that they represent the state of the art in the
field.
* Participate in faculty governance related to the program.
* Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION

* Ph.D. in the Social Sciences, Information and Computer Sciences, or
cognate field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Demonstrated teaching excellence and innovation in social data science or
related areas
* Application of high-quality pedagogical techniques and technologies to
encourage active learning, in online and offline graduate courses
* Knowledge of technical data science approaches, including coding in
python, data cleaning, data management, and data visualization
* Research experiences that demonstrate the application of data science
methods to investigate social platforms, policies, organizations, or
sociotechnical systems more broadly
* A continued commitment to developing as a teacher-scholar
* Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student
population, including first-generation college students
