Applied Radicalization Research: Science and Business in Dialogue

Security research is not purely academic but is always closely connected 
to society, politics, economy, or simply: reality. Therefore, we invite 
contributions for the NTF workshop in February, especially from, for, or 
regarding the corporate world. How can the professional field of 
"extremism prevention" be located in corporations, NGOs, etc.? Where are 
the needs and the social and economic challenges of applied 
radicalization research? As always, fundamental works and projects from 
the subject area that offer practical relevance are welcome. And, of 
course, as always, young researchers in the field of security research 
are particularly welcome to present their project progress, be it a 
master's, doctoral or post-doctoral project.

We look forward to contributions from the following topics, among others:

- Fraud/social engineering for terrorist financing
- “Chief Extremism Officers” in companies
- Right-wing extremism in trade unions
- Links between organized crime and terrorism/extremism
- Digital authenticity: identity theft
- Sanctions, unstable regimes, war zones: the responsibility of corporations
- Technology, tools, and methods for counterterrorism
- Monitoring: Early warning systems to protect against terrorism/extremism
- International payments and terrorism
- Personal Protection
- Security research for better risk management
- Cooperation between industry and authorities: The role of police and 
intelligence agencies
- Best Practices: Experiences, frameworks, ideas

If you would like to present your idea at our workshop, please send us 
an abstract of no more than 1000 characters and a short biography by 
January 28, 2023, to: NTF23 at ntfev.org. You will receive feedback by 
January 31, 2023. Travel and lodging expenses may be covered by prior 
arrangements. Two outstanding papers, selected by the Board of 
Directors, will be presented directly at the MOTRA conference in the 
"grand setting."

MOTRA and the Terrorism Research Network (NTF)

The collaborative project "Monitoring System and Transfer Platform 
‘Radicalization’" (MOTRA) (https://www.motra.info) is a research network 
in the context of civil security research funded by the German Federal 
Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Federal 
Ministry of the Interior (BMI). The project arose within the framework 
of establishing a Research Cluster of Excellence on "Early Detection, 
Prevention and Countering of Islamist Extremism and Terrorism." MOTRA 
aims to systematically monitor radicalization in Germany, with a 
particular focus on the development of Islamist extremism and terrorist 
acts, using multimethod, longitudinal phenomenon/trend analyses and 
in-depth case analyses.

The Terrorism Research Network (NTF, Netzwerk Terrorismusforschung) has 
been an associated/transfer partner of the MOTRA network since 2019. In 
this function, the NTF is responsible for promoting young researchers in 
terrorism/extremism research. We are delighted to be the first Security 
Research Young Investigators Network in the context of a Research 
Cluster of Excellence and cordially invite especially you as young 
researchers to present and discuss your research ideas, projects, 
theses, or doctoral and post-doctoral projects at this year's NTF 
Workshop in the context of the MOTRA Annual Conference in Wiesbaden! The 
small stage of the NTF workshop, near the large MOTRA-K stage, offers 
you the opportunity to come into contact and exchange with scholars from 
the field of security research as well as (de)radicalization work, 
terrorism and extremism research, to deepen specific topics in person or 
digitally provided break-out rooms, to expand your network as well as to 
approach potential supervisors for research projects. As the pandemic 
allows, social gatherings are possible as part of the workshop.

Notes on the event format due to the corona pandemic

The workshop will be held as a hybrid event to safeguard against all 
eventualities. Online participation is, therefore, possible without 
restrictions. If you are interested in participating without a 
presentation, we request registration (of NTF association members and 
external guests) by February 26, 2023. Spontaneous or anonymous 
participation is not possible either on-site or online. We will inform 
you about the exact format, conditions of participation, and program in 
due time.
