Position Summary:
The School of Media and Communication invites applications for an Assistant Professor in
Strategic Communication. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, in-person position starting
August 2024.
School of Media and Communication
The School of Media and Communication (SMC) is one of 17 academic units in the College of
Arts and Sciences. The College strives to foster and sustain an engaging culture of discovery,
creativity, teaching, learning, and collaboration, enriched by a diversity of experiences and
perspectives. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute, through
their teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service, to our efforts to meet the challenge of
achieving inclusive excellence in our academic community. The College takes a cohort-based
approach to faculty success, providing resources and support within the Dean’s Office and
through collaboration with Arts and Sciences departments and schools, leadership teams in
other colleges, and university-serving partners such as the Center for Faculty Excellence.
Through these connections, we are developing comprehensive programming that supports the
professional growth and advancement of faculty across all disciplines, ranks, and career stages.

The SMC is home to 30 full-time faculty with national and international reputations, 460
undergraduate majors, and more than 100 graduate students. Undergraduates pursue
baccalaureate degrees in Advertising, Communication, Journalism and Public Relations, Media
Production and Studies, and engage in various student media groups. Graduate students can
pursue MA or PhD degrees in Media and Communication. The Ph.D. program has 28 students in
3 emphasis areas: Critical Media and Rhetoric, Interpersonal Communication, Media Audiences
and Processes. Our SMC faculty are devoted to student success at all academic levels, embrace
multiple methodologies, and work collaboratively. The School of Media and Communication
strives to develop individuals who contribute meaningfully to society, support civic
engagement, and shape the future as global professionals.
The School of Media and Communication is housed in the Kuhlin Center. The Kuhlin Center is a
unique production facility that sets a standard for education in a production control room
environment. Production spaces include a 1,740 sq. ft. studio and a 300 sq. ft. insert studio, a
900 sq. ft. audio recording studio, two student-managed radio stations, and a convergence lab.

Essential Functions:
• Teach courses at the undergraduate, master's, or Ph.D. levels in advertising, public
relations, or strategic communication
• Develop a robust research agenda that leads to publications in high-quality media and
communication journals; actively seek external research support as appropriate;
• Advise students at all levels, including master’s theses and doctoral dissertations; and
• Provide service to the school, college, university, and the profession.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in mass communication, strategic communication, or a related field (e.g.,
advertising, public relations). ABDs are eligible to apply, but all requirements for the
doctoral degree must be met by August 2024;
• Record of publication in peer-reviewed research publications or high-quality industry
publications;
• Experience teaching communication courses at undergraduate level (including teaching
assistant experience) in areas of advertising, public relations, and strategic
communication on-campus or online modalities; and
• Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices that support students with
diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
Preferred Qualifications
• 3 years or more professional experience in strategic communication or related field;
• Previous teaching experience at the university level as instructor of record;
• Evidence of effective teaching in one or more of the areas: audience analytics and
media measurement, social media, programmatic and computational advertising,
recommendation algorithms, non-profit strategic communication, organizational
communication, and native advertising
• Evidence of an active research agenda and publications on the future of strategic
communication, such as the impact of technology on the field;
• Experience in interdisciplinary teaching or research collaborations; and
• Experience in seeking external funding to support research.

BGSU policy requires finalists to authorize and pass a background check prior to receiving an
offer of employment.
