While I've used Discord for hobby uses like online 3D games,
I urge caution in using Discord for professional and
academic use given they allegedly scrape chats for AI training.
Our groups I participate in are looking for a similarly easy
to use chat system to Discord. Ideally that would be one
that is self-hosted for privacy reasons. Owning and
controlling one's own data is important.
An email list works okay for asynchronous conversations, but
something closer to synchronous communications might be
helpful for this group.
