Dear colleagues
I am delighted to announce our new book, DigitalTechnologies, Smart Cities and the Environment: in the ruins of broken promises(Adi Kuntsman and Liu Xin, Bristol university Press 2024). Drawing on academicscholarship and two case studies from Manchester and Helsinki, this timely andaccessible book examines what happens when these promises are broken, as theyprioritise technological innovation rather than environmental care. The bookreveals that smart cities’ vision of sustainable digital future obfuscates theenvironmental harms and social injustices that digitisation inflicts. Theframework of “broken promises”, coined by the authors, centres environmentalquestions in analysing imaginaries and practices of smart cities. The book usesthe notion of broken promises as a conceptual framework and as a lens to tell adifferent story about smart cities – and, in doing so, also to paves ways for anew understanding of the narratives, imaginaries, and the material andsocio-economic arrangements that configure the relation between technology, human practices, and the environment more broadly.
We have our first online book launch on November 15th11am GMT / 12 CEST https://shorturl.at/mggFL- the event is free, but registration is required.
All the best
Adi
