Hi everyone,

We are delighted to announce the publication of our latest CDT research
report, "Moderating Maghrebi Arabic Content on Social Media: Challenges
and Implications
<https://cdt.org/insights/moderating-maghrebi-arabic-content-on-social-media/>".
This report investigates the significant challenges for moderating
Magrabi Arabic content on social media platforms, a topic critically
under-examined in current literature. This report is part of a research
series by CDT on the challenges of moderating low-resource languages in
the Global South.

Using a mixed-method approach involving interviews, focus groups, and
online surveys, our study found that many social media companies employ
a global content moderation strategy, whereas others adopt a localized
approach tailored to regional cultural contexts. Additionally, Maghrebi
Arabic users often resort to tactics like "algospeak" to evade
moderation algorithms, driven by concerns over perceived political
censorship. They also rely on mass reporting due to ineffective
reporting mechanisms. Also, we found that the lack of diversity in
natural language processing teams and inadequate training datasets for
Maghrebi Arabic dialects significantly impact the accuracy of automated
content moderation systems.

We invite you to read and share this report within your networks.

take care,

Dhanaraj
