The book is based on over 3-year-long ethnographic research (including digital and traditional ethnography) and 40 in-depth interviews with Serbian migrants in London and introduces a new theory and concept of national identity - 'doing nation' - to argue that national identities come into being and are sustained through everyday mediated interpersonal communication. As such, the book argues the nation represents embodied cultural and discursive practices, and not an abstract imagined community, and should be thought of as a verb - 'doing nation', a dynamic process. You are warmly invited to the online launch of the monograph 'Doing Nation' in a Digital Age: Banal Expressions of Nationalism and Cosmopolitanism in Polymedia Environments<https://www.routledge.com/Doing-Nation-in-a-Digital-Age-Banal-Nationalism-and-Cosmopolitanism-in-Polymedia-Environments/Vico/p/book/9780367625894?srsltid=AfmBOorvHMka-jo-2J0xzI6-eBO8E3ZGYyLaMlXWTWYg0504pMMfldjA>, published with Routledge in December 2024<https://www.routledge.com/Doing-Nation-in-a-Digital-Age-Banal-Nationalism-and-Cosmopolitanism-in-Polymedia-Environments/Vico/p/book/9780367625894?srsltid=AfmBOorvHMka-jo-2J0xzI6-eBO8E3ZGYyLaMlXWTWYg0504pMMfldjA>. The event is co-organised by the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) and the Centre for European Studies (CES) at the University of Exeter.
