Thx for raising this important issue.
Apologies for the self-promotion, but this issue is one big reason why I launched Hearsay Culture on Stanford University radio in 2006 (https://hearsayculture.com/). I’ve interviewed at least 150 academics over the past 19 years; in fact, I’ve found a number of my guests for the show on this list, and they’ve been fantastic!
Based on my experience, part of the reason has to do with the general obscurity in which many academics operate (especially at schools that lack robust publicity departments, or with publishers whose marketing is lacking). Other aspects include the lack of expertise among some journalists themselves, making it difficult for many to ascertain what questions to ask and to whom; journalism marketing (a high profile school is easier to market for eyeballs than one that is lesser known); and time (it’s easier to find people who are already public and known quantities than digging thorough school and other bios).
At the risk of being presumptuous, I would like to propose two things, if of interest:
1/ This is an important issue. I’d like to convene a small group to discuss how we might collectively work to help amplify the massive academic expertise that sits on the sidelines in journalism (including radio and podcasting) — especially when the need for tech expertise is so great, and so simultaneously diminished, in policymaking as well as journalism. Please email me at info at hearsayculture.com if you’d like to be part of a Zoom discussion on this topic.
2/ If anyone has a paper, book, or other project that you think would be a good fit for Hearsay Culture Network (HCN), please email me at content at hearsayculture.com. Please note that HCN includes not just the Stanford radio show, but also a few other shows with my colleague, veteran tech law podcaster Denise Howell (more info here: https://hearsayculture.com/about).
Thx, Best, Dave
