Dear AoIR,
I have an opening for a funded PhD position in open-source software or alternative economic and production structures within digital tech as part of my team in the Digital Technology, Governance and Policy Research Group at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Digital Engineering at the University of Potsdam in Germany. The funding is for three years commencing in spring 2025.

Potsdam is located within easy commuting distance of Berlin - on the same metro system. Knowledge of German or some willingness to learn is helpful to live and work in Germany, but our team's working language is English; you can write and defend your PhD and take any necessary classes and trainings in English; the majority of university and administrative processes are bilingual, and many people live long-term (including within our team) without learning German.

As a team, we sit at the intersection of the technical and social. We are looking for someone who can combine quantitative computational work with qualitative elements, and who is motivated by and grounded in social science theories and concerns while also being able to interface and work with computer scientists and digital engineers.

Further information, including application materials and how to apply can be found at:

The application deadline is Friday 28th February.

Best,
Gillian Bolsover
Professor of Digital Technology Governance and Policy
