Dear AoIR community,
I hope this message finds you well. Apologies if this cross-posting is unwelcome — and thank you for reading on if not!
I'm excited to share that my book, Social Media Cultures, is now available from Lexington Books/Bloomsbury Publishing. You can find a free preview on Google Books at https://tinyurl.com/mr3jmnmw which also lists options for purchasing the full version.
My book provides a theoretically-grounded, historical exploration of the social media landscape. It traces the evolution of social media – from traditional media like letters, postcards, and the telephone to new media and platforms. I use historical and theoretical frameworks to help students and scholars better understand the intricacies of nuanced modern dynamics like cancel culture, self-expression, and celebrity influence. Focusing on mobility, political discourse, and the power of witnessing from global perspectives, I use empirical case studies from both the Global South and North to demonstrate the profound impact of social media on culture, politics, and everyday life. My book also considers how racial and other inequalities are embedded in the very architecture of social media. Ultimately Social Media Cultures also encourages readers to reflect on their roles within the broader social media ecosystem and to consider the far-reaching consequences of social media engagement on a global scale.
If you're interested in hosting a talk, class visit, or discussion, I would be interested in connecting!
Please accept my sincere apologies for the self-promotion, but I am responsible for the promotion of this book…
Best wishes,
Dhiraj Murthy
