One of the earliest studies on this topic is:

Murero & Rice (2005), Internet and Health Care: Theory , Research and Practice (Routledge), particularly in  Kral’s chapter, “Communities for Mutual Help: Fears, Fictions, and Facts.” You’ll find early empirical work on “hungring-online forum.
