"Thanks, danah for mentioning the deal with Anthropic to (minimally)
compensate authors whose books were pirated.
First, before you start eyeing a new yacht, keep in mind that the promised
$3K per book settlement is split between authors and publishers. They are
recommending a 50/50 split but that will be up to the publisher. I'm trying
to find out what academic publishers plan to do and will share that
information if/when I get it."
I would add that, of course, that 50/50 split is the case only if the
publisher still has rights to the books in question. Most of my books are
science fiction novels, and I got the rights back over a decade ago.
All the best, Paul
