<div>Hello, all--</div>
<div>The slate of nominees contains many excellent candidates so far.
Nominated by another member of our group for an open council seat,
I decided to put my bio on this list too. An idea is to make use
of all the nominees for future committees and projects.</div>

<b>Research about Cyberspace</b>: Presented papers and wrote
published articles from an ongoing, long-term study of people who
become couples after meeting online, 1997-present. Interested in
ethical issues in online research, and methodologies of studying
online communications. Previously followed group efforts to pass
and defeat the Communications Decency Act.<br>
<br>
<b>Online Activities</b>: Host of Life Online, a discussion
forum at Howard Rheingold's Brainstorms and of the Culture forum at
the Utne Café. Teach distance education classes at the
undergraduate level since 1998.<br>
<br>
<b>A(O)IR</b>: For first conference 1.0, organized a panel of
two psychologists and a sociologist on "Online Relationships", and
moderated a panel including an anthropologist, a sociologist and a
psychologist from Spain on, "Discourse of Chat". For IR 2.0
will present how online couples communicate, and attend
pre-conference workshop on designing web research.<br>

<b>Upcoming Call for Papers</b>: Organizer and moderator of open
session, "The Internet and Society", American Sociological
Association, Chicago, IL, 2002. Deadline for submitted papers,
January 10, 2002.</font><br>

color="#000000"><b>Goals</b>: </font></div>
<div><font face="Symbol" size="-1" color="#000000">(1)</font><font
face="Times" size="-1" color="#000000"> To further ties to other
disciplines, making sure announcements of A(O)IR's conferences go
into newsletters of national and international associations, including
library science, linguistics, and computer technology, in addition to
the traditional social sciences and humanities.</font></div>
<div><font face="Symbol" size="-1" color="#000000">(2)</font><font
face="Times" size="-1" color="#000000"> To foster more participation
among the applied specialists and activists who create and maintain
online social networks in business, in local communities, and in
political arenas.</font></div>
<div><font face="Symbol" size="-1" color="#000000">(3)</font><font
face="Times" size="-1" color="#000000"> To continue the practice of
involving students in the conference, on panels and with special
awards and inducements to attend.</font></div>
