*Srinagar*: The chairman of the state human rights commission resigned on
Monday citing growing rights violations and accusing the government of "not
(being) serious about the commission", reports our correspondent.

"During my tenure, not even a single recommendation made by the commission
has been implemented," Justice (retd) Ali Mohammad Mir said in his
resignation letter to governor Lt Gen. (retd) S.K. Sinha.

ir, who said he quit on grounds of conscience, added: "Right from the day I
assumed office, I have been observing that the government is not serious
about the commission. I all along made strenuous efforts for drawing the
attention of the government to the difficulties of the institution. The
position has, however, worsened from day to day."

Mir said because of this, the commission had failed to achieve its
objectives and that he had been continuing in this post "much against my
conscience".
