  Sanjoy murder prime accused shot dead

 KAMALABARI, Aug 1 – An ULFA leader Mridul Hazarika alias Bhaskar Barua, who was a prime accused in the Sanjoy Ghosh murder case, was shot dead by the police in an encounter yesterday at Khanakrishnapur village under Gogamukh police station in Dhemaji district. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided the house of one Dhiren Barman, the hideout of the militants. As Barua started firing at the police, he was instantly shot dead by them.

Two other militants, Anil Basumatari alias Gadapani and Bhaben Sonowal alias Biplab Kachari surrendered. Police also recovered a cache of arms and ammunition. It may be mentioned that an internationally renowned social worker Sanjoy Ghosh, secretary, AVARD-NE was kidnapped, by the militants on July 4, 1997 from Mikheligaon, here under the leadership of Hazarika who was the commandant of Subanshiri regional council of the outfit at that time and shot dead by them at mid-night.

A pall of gloom descended in his native village Dighalimukh Ratanpur village and in Majuli subdivision at his death.
