        BDR shields cattle smugglers
OUR CORRESPONDENT New Delhi, Aug. 2: Hardpressed to meet the growing domestic demand and export orders for beef, especially in the wake of the approaching Id celebrations, Dhaka has instructed its border force — the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) — to facilitate cattle smugglers in a big way.
According to senior Border Security Force (BSF) officials, several wireless messages carrying these instructions have been intercepted at the border outposts since the BSF has come down with a heavy hand on cattle smugglers this year. Due to spiralling demand, the price of beef has gone up to 150 Bangladeshi taka where the cattle meat industry is worth 2000 crore taka per year.
The rise in demand has been due to an increase in domestic consumption and demand by the meat processing units meant for export.
“In fact, 60 per cent of the total firing by the BDR is done to give cover to the cattle smugglers. The reason for the BDR becoming hyperactive along the international border, especially in South Bengal, North Bengal and Tripura, is actually to help out the desperate cattle smugglers,” said a top BSF official. http://telegraphindia.com/1060803/asp/northeast/story_6561840.asp
