JORHAT, Aug 2 — Come March 2007, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is likely to slap derecognition on the 46-year-old Jorhat Engineering College (JEC) for failing to provide the necessary infrastructure, besides failing to abide by stipulated norms. Thanks are due on this front to the State Government for its lackadaisical attitude!

It was only last year that the State Government had after much persuasion managed to wrest conditional recognition for JEC from AICTE till March 2007, senior faculty members told this newspaper. However, even as the primary conditions laid down by AICTE are still pending fulfilment by the State Government, a sense of uncertainty obviously prevails among a sizeable section of students, teachers and guardians here.

“Let alone non-technical vacancies, a large number of technical posts too are yet to be filled as of now,” they informed. Not surprisingly, “lack of technically qualified faculty members has been a perennial problem at the JEC,” this newspaper was told.

“Though the APSC had conducted examinations for the technical posts and even published the results, the process of recruitment has been put on hold on one pretext or the other.”

Speaking about the negative effects percolating from the piquant situation, the senior faculty members added, “reputed multinational companies too have begun shying away from conducting campus interviews in recent times.”

Standing on the crossroads with their futures at stake, the students have questioned the State government’s rationale of planning to set up more engineering colleges when it cannot properly manage even the existing ones.
