Murthy sets terms for Infosys foray
A STAFF REPORTER Guwahati, Aug. 4: Infosys Technologies Limited chief N.R. Narayana Murthy means business. And this was amply clear when he set foot here for the first time. Assam, too, was all set to woo him.
On his first recce to the state, Murthy made it clear that certain preconditions would have to be met before the company thought of setting up a base here.
These conditions — good air connectivity, a five-star hotel, excellent bandwidth and good English-medium schools — have to be fulfilled before the dream of starting a development centre in Assam turns into reality.
Interacting with students at the Assam Engineering College (AEC) at Jalukbari on Friday, Murthy said he was impressed with the English-speaking abilities of the state’s students. But some other things need to be done before any decision is reached, he pointed out.
Murthy emphasised the need for ensuring excellent air connectivity for his clients along with a good five-star hotel with international cuisine. Not surprising, since 98 per cent of Infosys’ revenue come in from outside the country.
He also wanted good English-medium schools set up in the state for the employees’ children.
“It takes time to set up a development centre. My people will visit Assam now and then,” Murthy said, adding that it has taken more than a couple of years to chalk out plans for setting up a large development centre in West Bengal.
Murthy also met Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi this evening for a discussion.
Gogoi informed him about various initiatives taken by the state for attracting investment and improving computer literacy. He said talks are being held with a few groups for setting up a five-star hotel.
Revenue minister Bhumidhar Barman, health and information technology minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief secretary S.K. Kabilan and other government officials attended the meeting.
The Infosys chief and his wife Sudha Murthy also interacted with the students.
“The Assam Engineering College campus is a rare one as it boasts of a swathe of green. This is an ideal place for studies,” Murthy told the students, much to their delight.
He told the gathering that the company would recruit 30 of the college’s students from next year.
