Rebels have been fighting Indian forces for more than two decades
*The Indian government has suspended military operations against a
separatist group in the north-eastern state of Assam for 10 days.*
An official said the move is aimed at helping push forward peace talks
between the United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa) and the government.
The Ulfa is one of the most powerful separatist groups fighting Indian
security forces in the north-east.
It has been fighting for an independent state for more than 25 years.
Thousands of people have been killed in the fighting.
The rebels had called for a suspension of Indian military action before
holding any direct talks with officials from Delhi.
*Unusual move*
Federal Interior Secretary VK Duggal said the move to suspend military
action from Monday was a "goodwill gesture".
"We expect the Ulfa to reciprocate in a similar manner", he said.
During the past week a series of bombing attacks in Assam has left 10 people
dead and 50 wounded.
Correspondents say the Indian government's decision to halt military action
temporarily is seen as unusual move, at a time when it usually increases
security in the northeast in advance of Independence day celebrations.
Ulfa is holding peace negotiations with the Indian government through a
committee of civil society leaders called the People's Consultative Group
(PCG).
