This is in reference to the email of Prof.(Mrs) B.Jyrwa ( Forwarded by Partha Gogoi as below). She is lamenting that students of Assam and North East even are not aware of their own people as evident from a national talent competition. Following is my observation
Our education system in Assam is totally out of touch with the reality. It is no longer surprising that students are not aware of even Sri Sankardeva. Most of Our educational system does not emphasis on the overall development of a child, it does not teach us the rich cultural heritage that we have. As I am writing this , I am remembering Jyoti Prasad Agrawala , the pioneer of Assamese culture. He made Joymati way back in 1934. I am in total awe of the genius of this person , From casting to story-writing, from visualising and supervising the set building at the Chitraban Studio to handling the publicity material, he did it all. I heard this incident of Jyoti when he was making Joymati. When Jyoti Prasad reached Calcutta for final editing of his film, he realized that all the sound recording were damaged by a malfunction machine. There was no way that he could go back and record them again. So he himself began to record giving his own voice to more than forty characters
including the female characters. We have such amazing heritage to be proud of but how many of the young generation know about this?
Our education system will probably continue to be like this and we can not do much on that. But we can still work on small scale. We can prepare audio/video material, publish colorful print material to showcase our history and culture. Basically we have to market them to make it attractive to young generation. The good news is that I saw such endeavor in my visit to Assam and I am hopeful of such effort.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover
