  So, now.....
Which one of Assam's problems will be solved by using Dr. Perelman's new solution to Poincaré's conjecture?

Thanks Santanu. That was an interesting piece.
and it is interesting this quote about Dr. Perelman.

"He came once, he explained things, and that was it," Dr. Anderson said. "Anything else was superfluous."

It is no surprise that he is also not interested in the fame and the prize money.

Poincaré's conjecture can sound either daunting or deceptively simple. It asserts that if any loop in a certain kind of three-dimensional space can be shrunk to a point without ripping or tearing either the loop or the space, the space is equivalent to a sphere.

It is indeed a landmark event. Some more interesting details about the mathematicians involved and the problem itself (Poincare's conjecture) were contained in a New York times article "Elusive proof, elusive prover" last week:
  http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/15/science/15math.html

You need to be registered with NYT to get that article from the website. If you are interested and cannot download it, I'll be happy to send it to you.
  Santanu.
