College jubilee with Zubeen
PRANAB SINHA Sonitpur Zubeen Garg Aug. 31: A tinge of nostalgia and dollops of fun the final leg of the yearlong diamond jubilee celebrations of Darrang College promises to be an occasion to remember for a long time to come.
A series of programmes has been lined up for the jubilee bash from September 5 to 9, the highlight of which will be a Zubeen Garg concert on the penultimate day. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has been invited to inaugurate the concluding part of the jubilee celebration. He will also inaugurate the newly-constructed Diamond Jubilee Auditorium of the college.
Education minister Ripun Bora has been invited, too.
The district administration and the police department are making the necessary arrangements to ensure that the celebration passes off without a hitch. Traffic in the area could be chaotic during those five days and we are trying to work out a strategy to minimise inconvenience to commuters, a police official said.
The diamond jubilee celebration committee of the college has organised an alumni reunion on September 8. The diamond jubilee celebrations began on July 25, 2005, when the college turned 60. Pine saplings were planted to commemorate the occasion. The Bipinpal Das Memorial Lecture, an annual event organised by the college, coincided with the start of the celebrations.
Amalendu Guha, an educationist and former lecturer of the college, spoke about the contributions of the former principal Bipinpal Das towards improving the education system in Darrang College, particularly during and after the Chinese aggression of 1962, when residents of Tezpur were evacuated for their safety. Sources said as many as 29 seminars were organised by various departments of the college over the past year.
Darrang College was established in 1945 on a rectangular 45-bigha plot with a playground within the Tezpur municipal area. Today, over 4,000 students and 126 teachers are on its rolls. It offers degree level courses in three streams (science, arts and commerce) and 22 subjects.
After a delay of two years, the college celebrated its golden jubilee in November 1997. Ex-students settled in various parts of the country and abroad attended that event.
