I think Indian students in cities atleast are more aware about world at large than US ones -- since Indians have to watch CNN, BBC etc also besides local channels (mostly full of international news) whereas Americans only see local channels (CNN, ABC, NBC etc)
Same with movies, story books, comics, cars, clothes etc.
Indians have incentive for learning about the world -- they can go abroad to US or UK and earn and learn more -- Americans are already "up there" -so no such incentive.
Do Assamese students need more international education - to make them aware of globl opportunities available?
Umesh
PS: I am still giving international education to my students in India - through www.orkut.com about opportunties abroad.

New National Reports Highlight IE and Skills for the 21st Century Last month, NASBE (National Association of State Boards of Education) released a report entitled, Citizens for the 21st Century: Revitalizing the Civic Mission of Schools . The report concludes that schools need to re-emphasize citizenship as a fundamental mission of public education and state boards of education must promote civic learning to prepare students for their responsibilities as engaged citizens. To do this, the report recommendations include infusing instruction about government, history, law, and democracy into the curriculum with a strong global perspective and incorporating discussions of current local, national, and international issues and events into the classroom. Visit: www.nasbe.org/publications/Civic_Ed/civic_ed.html Tough Choices or Tough Times: The Report of The New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce was released on December 14. Recommending a complete
overhaul of the U.S. education system, Chairman Charles Knapp stated, "The first Commission, in 1990 never dreamed that we would end up competing with countries that could offer large numbers of highly educated workers willing to work for low wages. American workers must match their education levels." The new system of education would support students beginning at age three and create an infrastructure to stimulate learning, dramatically increase the number of students headed to college, and allow everyone in the workforce the chance to strengthen and improve their skills. First Youth Prizes Awarded in Goldman Sachs Foundation Prizes Competition The first winners in the new Youth category of the Goldman Sachs Prizes for Excellence in International Education were awarded scholarship prizes at Asia Society's Annual Dinner, hosted by Uma Thurman. Elyse DeLaittre, 17, a student at Minnetonka High School, near Minneapolis, Minnesota, won a grand prize of $7,500 for her three-minute documentary video focusing on inadequate access to clean water, a problem faced by nearly 1.1 billion people worldwide. A $5,000 scholarship prize went to Cory Gu, 17, a senior at Quince Orchard High School, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, for an essay on the potential of low cost laptops to improve access to education and employment for students worldwide. Grace Needlman, 17, a senior at Hathaway Brown High School, in Cleveland, Ohio, also won $5,000 for an essay in the form of recommendations to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee to control malaria
worldwide. Prompted by quotes from Mahatma Gandhi and Thomas Friedman, students created audio or video documentaries or wrote essays on topics as various as the genocide in Darfur, fresh water access, nuclear weapons in Iran and North Korea, international uses of technology, poverty, HIV/AIDS, and intellectual property rights. The students' submissions honed in on issues of importance to people around the world, offering thoughtful and varying solutions to some of the world's most vexing problems.
